I think Tobago is one of the most picturesque places on earth. You can’t beat driving all the way up the bendy, twisty Windward Road to Charlotteville. By the time you’ve arrived you have forgotten that you have a job, that you have children, that you are married and that you have rent to pay next week.
All you can think of is ways NOT to leave. You’ll buy a house in Tobago, you think, you’ll plant peas and dasheen in your backyard garden, you’ll work your garden, live close to nature and be healthier than you’ve ever been. Who cares about money? You realise that in the grand scheme of things – all your well-laid, much-fussed about plans – don’t matter. They don’t matter at all.
You’re looking at the charming houses lining Windward Road, you think, yes, I could live in one of those. They’re so neat and tidy with their white trim and fancy balustrades. When you look up at the night sky and realise just how starry a night can be, you were beginning to believe only 2 stars could be seen with the naked eye. But Tobago teaches you otherwise, you realise the term ‘Milky Way’ really is descriptive.
It is then you think to yourself, the way I am living is not life.
